Software development. Publishers sales analysis

The purpose of this development was to allow Publishers a fast and independent access to distribution data situated at the remote distributors' server. The software application contacts the server, downloads and consolidates data to further create sales/performance reports.

High level of automation assures that no programmer interference or knowledge of other software packages is required in order to produce the required reports. Detailed description of facilities is given further in this document. Due to various Clients (publishers) requirements to functionality and allowed budgets, the proposed software application has been implemented in 2 main versions.

Throught the the experience of being envolved into such project not only have we successfully completed the system, but have also learnt and familiarised ourselves with processes and terminology of the publishing and sales industry. Features in detail:

1. Automatic adjustable dial-up/broadband FTP connection to Publishers' distributor server for data download. Term “adjustable” is used to indicate that connection can be edited, i.e. access phone number, user login name & password can be changed at any time. Connection can also be re-configured to work directly with the Internet.
2. Automatic authentication and data download: the software will automatically supply user name and password to the server for authentication; after successful authentication data will start downloading.
3. Automatic data analysis / translation to local database: reformatting raw text files into a database file.
4. Automatic data cataloguing: data consolidation and elimination of double entries.
5. Automatic publisher sales reports with sorting by any column and with printing: generation of pre-set reports by choosing the required name of report from the menu; once report is generated – data in the table can be sorted by any column, ascending or descending.
6. Automatic export of data to Access, Excel, Text formats: facility to save generated reports to these popular formats by choosing “Save As” option from the menu.
7. Variety of sales reports: 10-12 different pre-built table and chart reports.
8. Automatic chart sales reports and printing: a graphic line reports representing data flow over a period of time, generated automatically by choosing appropriate name of the report from the Charts menu (Version 2 only).
9. Custom table reports wizard facility: a software module that allows building and saving for further use a virtually unlimited number of new reports through a visual interface/wizard (Version 2 only).
10. Custom chart wizard facility: a software module that allows building and saving for further use a new kind of report through a visual interface (Version 2 only).
